We See, In Part.

We See, In Part.

This passage grows in stature for me each year, it seems: I Corinthians 13:9-12 ESV For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. I used this passage as a tangential point to my lesson today with our Reason youth group at New Hope. We were in Romans 6 and were discussing grace and why we don’t keep sinning. As I was working up my notes for this week, the above passage came to mind. It so succinctly says, we see only in part right now. My...

Five Key Points from Romans 4

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to serve at New Hope‘s weekly gathering, called Momentum. Momentum is where Pastor Lyn leads us in a Bible study. Right now, the series, called Truth That Transforms, is on Romans. (See we have the complete Baptist alliteration thing going on!) It’s a small little Bible study, but it’s one that has really pushed me. Romans is a unique book. It’s the basics of our Christian faith, but it will put your mind in full workout mode because it’s not as simple as it might sound. It’s demanding. I’m talking CrossFit workout demanding . Big words like propitiation, justification and other -ations lurk in just about every chapter. Now Romans is a book that scares me. I spent some time...

Roll Tide Roll!

Roll Tide Roll!

If you are a guy – you’ve probably caught my completely not-subtle reference to that little event that usually goes down on Saturday’s and typically involves some food and a large, comfortable chair while some guys in same-colored clothes chunk around a funny-shaped ball. (If you are a female and you caught the reference, hopefully some lucky guy has you already, because you’re a catch!) The phrase “Roll Tide Roll!” is southern for “Go Alabama!” (…or possibly Alabamer dependent upon what part yer kin folk might hail from). In literature this is known as a metaphor. Basically, that means it’s something like a symbol, a metaphor stands for something else. When Alabama fans chant this phrase, they don’t literally mean lay down and roll like the...

Preacher: An Invested Christian

What exactly is an invested Christian you ask? Let me tell you about one. His name is Truman and he was my “Pop” who just passed away over three weeks ago. His life was finally the catalyst I needed to get this blog launched. His life provided the humbling realization that I will never be as good as him; I blew that idea up long ago. I don’t know that anyone shy of Jesus himself could fill those shoes. I certainly don’t have a shot. However, that realization spurred me on to do what I am able. Just so that you can begin to understand this man, I’ll give you a little bit of information on his life. He was born in October of 1921 in a town just shy of Harrisonburg, VA. (One of my favorite places on Earth, I might add!) He grew up pretty...
